Robert Earl Keen picked up a major Texas honor recently, and it had nothing to do with music charts or sold-out shows.

The Texas icon was named the 2026 Texan of the Year by the Texas Legislative Conference, a longtime statewide gathering of business and political leaders that marked its 60th year.

The conference, held annually in New Braunfels, focuses on the issues shaping the future of Texas. During this year’s event, Keen was recognized as the 52nd recipient of the Texan of the Year award.

Conference Chair AJ Rodriguez pointed to Keen’s leadership in the wake of the July 2025 floods as a major reason for the honor. When communities across Texas were hit hard over the Fourth of July, Keen stepped up in a big way, helping organize relief efforts and rally support.

That response led to REK and Friends: Applause for the Cause, a large-scale benefit that brought together more than 40 artists. The concert streamed worldwide and raised more than $3.2 million to aid flood relief, recovery, and rebuilding efforts across the state.

While Keen’s legacy in Texas music has been cemented for decades through his songwriting and storytelling, this recognition highlighted something more — his commitment to showing up for Texas communities when they needed it most.

In a statement, Keen said he was honored to receive the recognition and reflected on what the state has meant to him throughout his life and career. He also shared that being able to give back during such a difficult time for so many Texans is something he’ll always carry with him.

With the honor, Keen joined a notable list of past recipients that has included presidents, governors, U.S. senators, entertainers, and major business leaders.
